How Long Does Professional Car Detailing Take? Complete Time Guide

Everyone should get their car detailed regularly. Mobile detailing helps prevent a lot of serious issues, and it gives you a better experience in your car every time you drive it.

However, we also know that time is of the essence in modern society, and you probably can’t just book an appointment and let your schedule revolve around it. You need to know what to expect and schedule ahead of time to keep from messing up key parts of your life.

We’re breaking down what to expect, from the services offered to the typical professional car detailing duration, so you can plan your next appointment with confidence and ease.

How Long Does Car Detailing Take? A General Timeframe

In general, if everything goes according to plan and you don’t count the waiting time for your car to be serviced, you can expect it to take two to five hours.

That’s a pretty wide range. Especially when you have a busy day and need to plan things around it. Luckily, it’s fairly easy to figure out where you’ll fall in that range.

There are a wide variety of factors that will impact the service time, and we’ll go over each one.

1. How Busy the Service is

The timeframe we mentioned assumes you’ve already researched and chosen a reputable detailing service, booked an appointment properly, and the team starts work right away. Some services might allow you to come in and drop the car off, and then they’ll get to it when scheduled services are done, but you can expect the service time to ramp up significantly.

If it’s busy, you might not even be able to get it in for a day or two, or you might be required to book an appointment.

This is why, even if the service offers “walk-in” style detailing, we always recommend booking an appointment. Sometimes, the shop might get a little backed up and delay your service by a short bit, but it’s a lot less of a problem than dropping the car off and hoping they get to it.

2. State of the Car

This one is more of a common-sense thing. If you drop a car off that is fairly clean and well cared for, it’s going to be a lot easier for the team to detail it. They’ll still go over all the clean parts to really get a deep clean, but they won’t have to fight a lot of stains and set-in junk.

In contrast, if you drop your car off looking as if a tornado hit it, it’s going to take more time, even with basic services.

That’s not a problem; detailing is perfectly safe for older cars, and our goal is always to restore even heavily worn vehicles to a factory-clean condition. Just keep in mind it may take a bit longer depending on the level of wear.

3. Services Requested

There are different types of detailing packages. The most basic option usually includes the car’s interior and a basic cleaning of the exterior. This is cost-effective, doesn’t take much time, and is a great way to maintain your car more frequently.

However, if you add on engine bay cleaning or more advanced options, that will increase the amount of time it takes, and you’ll start getting closer to that five-hour mark with each added service.

That’s not a drawback, though. In fact, choosing experienced detailers who offer a full range of services can be well worth it. Additional detailing services are extremely useful to get a comprehensive cleaning and touch-ups. Just know that you’ll have more time and plan your booking around that.

4. Paint Touch-Ups and Coatings

Sometimes, you’ll be able to pick special services such as paint correction, ceramic coatings, or PPF applications. Our ceramic coatings are some of our most sought-after services.

Well, that’s when your appointment time gets a little trickier. Paint touch-ups and similar detailing tasks might add an hour or so, but something like a ceramic coating or PPF application can easily take a full 24 hours or a couple of days.

That’s a hefty amount of time to be without your car, and we completely understand that. So, it’s best to keep that in mind if you plan on having those more elaborate services performed. Luckily, most car owners will only get a coating applied once or twice in their car’s functional service life. So, it’s not something you do every time you get your car detailed.

It also provides a ton of benefits. Especially here in Carlsbad, where the sun is always shining and the ocean creates some unique challenges for paint jobs.

5. Unexpected Challenges

This isn’t common, but there is always the possibility of an unexpected challenge prolonging your car’s service period.

Detailing includes vent cleaning, getting into the fine crevices of the car for mold removal, and accessing complex parts of the car for an unmatched clean. If the team is expecting a straightforward job, but they get into your vents and find something more complicated to remove, that’s the type of thing that might extend your service period.

Best Practices to Speed Up Service

Getting your car detailed is important for a number of compelling reasons, and if you’re hoping to cut down on the time it takes, there are a few simple steps you can take to speed up the process.

First, always book an appointment, and get your car to the appointment about 15 minutes early. That way, the car is there, the team knows it’s waiting, and the second it’s your turn, they can pull it into the shop and get to work.

Then, keeping your car reasonably clean on your own also helps a lot. It takes time to clean up messes from the kids, get rid of trash, or deal with a lot of really bad stains. If you prevent those things, detailing goes a lot more smoothly.

On top of that, maintain a regular detailing schedule. Try to get it detailed once every six months with a basic service package. It’s a lot like cleaning a room. If you keep up with it, it’s a lot easier to clean it than if you let it go for a long time and then have to tackle a massive mess.
